Design & Fabrication of a Trauma Plate Gauge for the Medical Implant Industry

Kent Machine (KM) was contracted by a major Warsaw, IN-based medical industry firm in order to tap into the engineering talent and experience KM offers. KM participated in the design and fabrication of the Trauma Plate Gauge shown here. The process began with customer-provided specification and CAD files. Additional mechanical design and component sourcing resulted in selection of 6061-T6 aluminum and 4140 steel as the primary materials. Precision machining was utilized for fabrication, with tolerances of ±0.001". A LeBlond Makino CNC Mill, coupled with a Moore #3 Jig Grinder performed the primary fabrication steps. Subsequent assembly, heat treatment, and final inspection of geometry and function followed. The product delivered was notably faster than solutions offered by coordinate-measuring machine (CMM) type gauges.
